Shands Rehabilitation Hospital has been my home away from home since February 2011. I show you these photos of the pileated woodpecker outside a patient's room. It's the same woodpecker I saw in February, 2011.
Truett has been at Shands Rehab Hospital three times during this year; and after the first time, I hoped for the room with the woodpecker. But, that didn't happen.
The other morning I signed in at the outer reception office and a security guard asked, "Mam. Have you been down that corridor before?" It just so happened that a physical therapist's aide was standing beside me and she spoke up, "This woman practically owns Shands Rehab wing!"
The physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, doctors, aides, and all the others who have kept watch over Truett for these many months are to be applauded. Not only did they have to put up with an agitated old man . . . an onrey old man . . .a stubborn old man who thought he was in control of the situation,; but they did it with love and care. Oh, yes, Shands Rehabilitation Hospital knows Truett well.
"High Five!Truett!"
"You're going to spend Thanksgiving here with me, Truett!"
And it goes on and on . . . every day.
But, not only that. The comments come to me:
"Ms. Truett! How are you doing?"
"Ms. George! He's doing good today! How are you?"
One thing I have heard repeatedly from everyone is, "Truett! Be nice to Merry! She is your care giver!"
And I appreciate that.
Yes, Shands Rehabilitation Hospital has been Truett's home away from home, as well as mine. I would recommend this facility to anyone who needs loving, tender, hard-working, care. They are the best!
Truett comes home on Wednesday and we start a new chapter in our lives. I'm nervous. He asks if I am ready for him to come back home and I say, "Yes."
Mom and I, the puppies, and the cats need Truett back home.
Thank you, Shands Rehabilitation Hospital! You are the best! You have been our home away from home for almost a year!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF YOU.
