My trip to Tallahassee was an energizing one. We were asked to 'think outside the box' regarding the FCAT Writing test. So we did. Instead of FCAT Writing+ test, FCAT Math test, FCAT Reading test and FCAT Science test, our committee foresees an FCAT SUPER TEST! This test would integrate reading, writing, math and science and social studies. There's nothing new about integrating, since the holistic approach to education integrates all disciplines for the real world experience. (The perfect way to educate a child). This kind of test is very exciting to me. For example, the students read an article about an animal (science & reading). Then they graph or chart animal information (math), and eventually they write about a time an animal made a difference to them. This is totally off my head; but the concept is a good one, but much more difficult for item writers who actually construct the test. This Super Test will not take place during my education career, but it is a great idea. Why have writing in February? Math in March? Reading in March and Science in March?..and all of the tests disconnected with each other as disciplines of education.
Mom went with me to Tallahassee and that is a trip in itself. Unfortunately, the hotel did not have a restaurant; but the hotel staff were willing to sneak food to Mom for lunch. Breakfast buffet came with registration, so I knew Mom wouldn't starve. Basically, Mom and I went out to dinner, talked, read our books and she watch her favorite program, "Survivor." My educator friends thought Mom was 'cute'. They thought it was wonderful that I bring her, at 83 years old. I am happy to say that I am very happy that she is able to travel at her age, even though she embarrasses me at times. Here's an example. We step into an elevator. Mom immediately states, "I'm the Mother!" I look down and shake my head and think, "Why me?" Actually, it's a matter of acceptance. Accepting that this is who I am. This is who she is and this is what we do. I feel very fortunate that my mom is still alive and opinionated.
That is a fabulous idea! I was in an "experimental" program in college wherein we studied History, Philosophy, and Religion simultaneously. It makes sense, because it happened simultaneously. Life isn't segmented the way traditional education presents the various subjects. You have to be able to think about various things and how they work together. Good work, very good idea!
