Truett received an email about tracking nightjars. "Tracking what?" I asked. "Chuck-will's Widows and Whip-poor-wills," he answered.
We have been in Florida since 1973 and the Chuck-will's Widow has always intrigued me with its night calls. I've kept a weather journal off and on for years and always recorded the date that I heard the Chuck-will's Widow. I know the majority of the time the dates were between March 25-28. Last year I didn't hear any and I worried that they no longer resided in our area. However, I've been hearing them this month so I'm overjoyed.
Here is the website for tracking these birds. By the way, who is "will" in the name. I must do more research. tracking nightjars
It was great to see you guys today, as always. this blog reminded me of the other night when i was over at my moms house with a few other friends. we were all sitting out on the front porch picking our guitars and us guys were puffing on some nice cigars i had bought down in st pete a few weeks ago. both myself and my friend jb were wearing orange t-shirts and flip-flops. we were definately in our comfort zone. i noticed moms binoculars were sitting on the patio table and gail, moms friend asked her about them. mom explained that she liked watching the birds and especially the hummingbirds in her yard. thats when gail pipped up and said "well, looks like you have to orange bellied puffers on your front porch"! well, we all busted out laughing. it was certainly the funniest thing i had heard all day.
hope you guys have a great weekend.
