I baby-sat Madeline and Oliver this morning and throughout the morning I began to think about the 70's movement that changed our society. No, it wasn't the burning of the bras and women's rights. Nor was it the "green movement" to save our planet. It, in fact, was the "children's rights" movement; and this morning I felt the full brunt of that societal change.
It all started when I cooked Maddie a cheese quesadilla for brunch. The skillet I used was quite small, so I folded the ends toward the center. When Maddie saw it she said, "Nana this don't suppose to have this part."
"Maddie, I know , but I used the wrong pan. Just eat it."
Following that Maddie put me in time-out for no apparent reason. I asked, "Why am I in time-out?"
"Because you hit my baby brother," she answers.
"No, I didn't," I said. Then...
"Nana, put your hands in your lap. You're in time-out...and DON"T TALK!"
Now, as a grandmother, this was a little shocking to have a 3 -1/2 year old tell me what to do. After all, I am the adult. Well the minute Merry Jennifer walked in the house, you-know-who tattles on me.
"Mommie, Nana used the wrong pan to cook my quesadilla!"
I'm thinking now that when Maddie turns 15 and her little boyfriend comes over, I'll have my revenge plan in place.
You know, Sam stays in time out. Maddie is the boss, for sure. I just pretend to be.
