Oh, my aching back. I have slept on five different beds over the past ten days or so and they are not comfortable. Too hard. Too soft. So are the pillows. Too squishy or too hard so that my head doesn't even mash and hold a dent in them. Ahhh, I'm looking forward to my water bed and just right pillow. I think we are both getting itchy to get home.
We will go to a Salmon Bake tonight. We went to one in Juneau and it was fabulous. We were outdoors under large tents. Live entertainment and all the alderwood smoked salmon and bar-b-que you could eat along with salads and vegetables and desserts. Tonight's Salmon Bake is here in Fairbanks. The sign says "all the halibut, King salmon and prime rib you can eat", all for a meager price of $30 per person. Believe me, that's the typical dinner price here in Alaska for authentic food.
Today Truett and I drove North to see the Alaskan pipeline. Of course I took pictures to be viewed later. Then we kept driving North for about 30 miles through black spruce forests. As we left we saw a sign that said, "Next gas...118 miles". That was enough to make me nervous so we just explored part of the Highway and headed back to civilization. We're going to Creamer's Field this afternoon late to photograph sand hill cranes.
Tomorrow afternoon we leave Alaska and fly to Seattle, to Atlanta and on to Jacksonville. We will fly through the night so we won't get home until Friday. This will be good for Truett because he sleeps well in a sitting position. On every bus tour I had to hold on to his jacket because he was in slumberland and I feared he would fall in the bus aisle. Even in the park theater while we viewed the history of Alaska I heard "Zzzzzz!" I elbowed Truett and said, "Wake up. You're disturbing people." So he will sleep well tomorrow night on the plane.
I spoke with my mom a couple of days ago and she said, "Are you ready to come home?"
"Not yet," I answered. "We have more to see." Well, mom. Now I'm ready to come home.
