Since I decided to title this post "random thoughts", I also decided to show you "random birds". When Mom and I went to Lake City last week I told her, "I have to drive by the lake. I have to look for birds!" And that's what we did.
So what about my random thoughts? Well . . .
1. I am pleased to see Truett trying really hard at rehab. The physical therapists are pleased that he is able to lift himself from his wheelchair to the walker. They ask me, "Is this about how he was walking at out-patient rehab?" Then I tell them, "Definitely not! He was much better. . .much more stable. He used to walk two hundred feet before resting!" But they praise Truett anyway. I never knew the progress Truett had made with physical therapy until now. I think about all the times I complained and got angry that Truett wasn't motivated to walk . . . well, now I would love to have him the way he was three weeks ago.
2. Truett is still so confused. It's a cognition issue with him. It's a brain injury. He still doesn't know the name of the President of the United States of America. One day it's Roosevelt. The next it's Kennedy. He also does not know what year it is. Mostly, Truett says, "1934 or 1935", the year he was born. But today, he said it was 2024. It breaks my heart for him to ask repeatedly, "Where am I? Why am I here?" And I repeat the same answer each and every time, implicating his "bad recliner!" I was given a possible release date today of October 6, but if one's mind isn't stable, is he really safe to come home? I think it's a Medicare/insurance issue, but definitely one that can be dealt with.
3. Truett's brother, Boyce is visiting for several days, and that's a good thing. Truett has asked for two days, "When is Boyce coming? I thought he was coming today." But, finally, Boyce arrived and spent some time with Truett. I had thought I would send Boyce to rehab tomorrow and give myself a break; but I have since, changed my mind. I will usher Boyce around and we'll both visit Truett. I can't surprise Truett by not visiting. I have to prepare him mentally for my absence.
4. My twin, Sherry and her husband, Quinn; my sister, Susan and her husband, Larry; and my brother Steve are arriving on Saturday. The purpose of their visit is to help me have an "indoor estate sale" next weekend of my mother's possessions. So this coming-up week, we will all be in High Springs "bagging and tagging", and hopefully selling Mom's things. Just having family visit for any reason at this time is a healing remedy. Merry Jennifer and Sam and my grandchildren will come out Saturday as well and we will watch some Florida/Kentucky football, followed by a catered dinner from GTO's . . .braided chicken, broccoli and rice casserole, brownies and tea! Let the good times roll!
And those are my random thoughts and random birds.
