The Lake City Lion's Club is such a special group of men and women. They held their annual Christmas Party on Charles Snipes's property tonight. Charles had the golf cart ready to transport Truett to the bonfire; but thanks to Jim Burke who had the insight to take Truett's wheelchair to the bonfire and then transfer Truett to his wheelchair, I think it made Truett feel more like the rest of his friends. You know, sitting on the ground instead of sitting at eye level above the others.
I don't see all of the Lion Club members often. Just a couple of times a year. But the Christmas Party, is exceptionally special. Relaxed. Casual. Good food.
I talked to the wives and joked with the faithful friends who pick Truett up every Tuesday night for the regular meetings. I apologized for the burden they may feel from time to time; but they all said they do it because they like Truett . . . and to give me a break. I appreciate it, boys! You will never know how much.
The ending of the party was one of my favorite parts. When it came time to take Truett back to the car, I said, "Don't you have to get the golf cart to take him to the car?"
"Heck no. We'll just drag him backwards in his wheelchair," one Lion member said.
"You drag him backwards in his wheelchair . . . in the sand?" I asked, astonished.
"Hell, yeah! He weighs too much to push him, so we drag him! He doesn't know the difference as long as he gets there."
"But there are vines and thorns and poking sticks on the way to the car," I said.
"Doesn't matter. We drag him backwards real fast!"
And they did just that.
I love you Lake City Lion's Club members! You think weird like I do.
This post is great, Merry! It really made me laugh! I'm glad you had a good time! What amazing friends you have! :-)
