Susan and I stopped by Books-A-Million today so she could look at books to purchase. We were there for one whole hour. Do you know how long that really is especially if you don't want to buy a book? A very long time. And then I wondered, "Do they have book stores in England?"
Well, while we were there, I bought the book Bird by Bird some instructions on writing and life, written by Anne Lamott. You have to understand that if you are in Books-A-Million for one hour, you have to buy a book and read it while you smell the coffee lattes brewing behind your back while you're waiting for your English sister to lavish in all America has to offer book-wise.
I am now reading Bird by Bird and am re-learning all the lessons about how to start writing again. You see, as a teacher, I taught to the FCAT test. Basically, formulaic. But it has been a long time since I wrote from my soul.
Bird by bird. Write daily. Describe something. Watch people and describe a character. Write about Tippy, the squirrel. Write about Maggie and Lily. Observe people and describe them. Just write every day.
Bird by bird.
I'm loving reading again, and pretty soon I will love writing again.
